What to Look for When Buying a Satellite Navigation System

Introduction

GPS, or "Global Positioning System", devices rely on a network - or "constellation" - of satellites in orbit around the Earth. The satellites transmit information to GPS receivers on the surface of the Earth, and, by a process known as "triangulation" - based on the information received from multiple satellites - a receiver can determine its exact geographic position, within a few metres, or so.

Satellite Navigation Systems Features & Benefits

If you are a driver, you may be lucky enough to own a vehicle with an inbuilt satellite navigation system. These are usually professionally installed, and result in a lack of "clutter" - from wires, suction cups, or other fittings, for example - in the passenger cabin. They are also, however, expensive, and permanently fixed, so that they cannot be transferred from vehicle to vehicle, and may provide an incentive for thieves. A popular, affordable, alternative is a portable GPS unit, equipped with accessories that allow it to be used in a car, or other vehicle. Such accessories typically include a suction cup for attachment to the windscreen of a vehicle, a 12-volt DC power adaptor, and charger, and an external antenna.

A large, bright, colour screen should be a pre-requisite for any satellite navigation system used in a vehicle. You need to be able to see directions displayed on the screen at a glance, with minimum distraction from the road, itself, and colour screens are far easier to see than monochrome models, especially in bright sunlight. You may, of course, prefer audible instructions, and if this is the case, try to choose a GPS unit with a computer "voice", or a selection of voices, that is easy to understand, and doesn`t become tiresome after your first few turns. Bear in mind, too, where, geographically, you want to use a GPS unit. Some systems are supplied with maps of, say, the United Kingdom, and most of Europe, as standard, but others are not, and you may also have to pay extra for maps of more "exotic" locations. The ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T for example has Text to speech relaying of street names, road signs and traffic alerts, real-time traffic information with warnings about traffic conditions and an alternative route offered and fixed speed cameras integrated for France and Belgium and available in downloading for the other European countries.

It may be, of course, that you are a walker, or hiker, who wants to use a GPS unit not for in car satellite navigation - at least, not on a permanent, or semi-permanent, basis - but for navigation on foot. Completely portable GPS devices, at the lower end of the market, do tend to have smaller screens, and smaller storage capacity - which is normally in the form of integral memory, or memory expansion cards, such as SD, or "Secure Digital", rather than hard disk drive - than those intended for use, exclusively, in vehicles. More sophisticated models often include hard disk drive storage, along with a range of extras, such as MP3 playback, and Bluetooth, capability.
