Preventing Tipper Rollovers

Matthew Taylor TSafe Header

It has been known for many years that the overturning of tipper vehicles has been a major problem within the aggregate transport industry and whilst health and safety guidelines have been issued, and tilt table tests undertaken, it is still the driver at the end of the day who has full responsibility and control during the tipping process.

A cross slope of as little as 5 degrees can be enough to cause a tipper to overturn and this risk is increased when in conjunction with other factors such as cross winds, load type, uneven loading, wear and tear on the chassis/suspension. It is therefore vital that the ground is as level as possible before tipping commences and that the driver is alerted to dangerous cross slopes.  Here are some examples highlighting the dangers of tipper overturns.                             .

Inclinometer Systems are designed to provide drivers of tipper vehicles with a cost effective solution to the problem of vehicle overturns by taking the guesswork out of tipping and providing a clear indication of the vehicles angle before tipping takes place.

TSafe Inclinometer SystemTSafe Tipper Safety System

Transport Support has been an industry leader in the design and manufacture of specialised Inclinometer systems for use on tipping vehicles and trailers for over 15 years. Our new TSafe Inclinometer is a modular safety system that combines all the best features and technology from our range of top selling vehicle safety products. TSafe was designed to address three main safety concerns when tipping…

  • Unsafe vehicle angle.
  • Contact with overhead high voltage power lines.
  • Driving with the tipper body raised.

TSafe can be an Inclinometer, a high voltage overhead cable detector or both, combined with wireless capability and full event data recording. The TSafe display has a fully touch control 3.5″ back-lit screen and a built in spoken audio voice warning and features a new two axis inclinometer sensor that can monitor the vehicles angle left to right and front to back up to a maximum of 23 degrees in 0.1 degree increments, to enable the TSafe system to be used on almost any type of vehicle from a small tipper to a large quarry dump truck. We have also incorporated a body raised sensor which allows separate alarm angles to be programmed for body up or down positions as well as a body raised warning. The system has detailed event logging which records all alarm warnings, parameter and setting against a time and date stamp. In the event that an incident did happen then this data can be reviewed just like a black box flight recorder. TSafe will give audio/visual warnings to the driver before a potential rollover situation occurs and can also prevent the tipper body from being raised through the use of a tipper cut-off valve if an unsafe vehicle angle is detected.

TS Mast Mounted Camera

TS Inclinometers are also normally used in conjunction with one of our all round vision 5 camera systems which can be an aid to safe tipping when a mast mounted camera looking into the tipper body will give the driver a clear view of the load as it is discharged and allow them to identify when a load is unevenly distributed or sticking in the body. We also recommend using a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) with one of our camera kits to give up to 1 months storage of all CCTV images.

The Key Points to Safe Tipping

  • The cross slope must be less than 5 degrees.
  • Suitable weather conditions – Check for high cross winds and frozen/wet loads.
  • Tractor & Trailer should be inline.
  • Check that the body has been loaded correctly and the load is evenly distributed.
  • Visual check for overhead obstructions such as power lines which can be difficult to spot.
  • Regular maintenance of the vehicle and trailer – It should be inspected daily for defects, particularly in the tipping gear, suspension and tyres.
  • Never shunt the vehicle or drive off with the body raised.
  • Do not raise the tipper body too quickly particularly if there is a substantial volume of load remaining in the body.
  • Check that the tailgate is open and functioning correctly.

These lights are fitted with our new 300mm super bright LED heads which are also available in Green, Amber, Arrows, Crosses, Crossing Man  etc. We specialise in the design and manufacture of bespoke traffic light systems for almost any application.

Coming Soon! The new HVDS Mk2 High Voltage Overhead Cable Detector

The new High Voltage Detection System (HVDS) MkII from Transport Support is a further development of our highly successful HVDS range and incorporates our latest high voltage detection technology from our newly developed TSafe system.

High Voltage Detection System HVDS Mk2

The new HVDS has improved sensitivity, greater interference rejection, wide input voltage range and much greater sensitivity setting range. Like our TSafe system, the new HVDS features a signal strength meter to give the operator an indication of proximity to a detected overhead power line.

We are currently in the final testing phase of the development and will be realising the new kit in the next 6-8 weeks. A limited number of Beta sample versions are available for trails. Please contact our sales team for further information.
